Sihanoukville is a coastal province and city in southwestern Cambodia, right on the Gulf of Thailand. Best known for its beaches and bustling deep-water port, it has undergone a massive real estate boom in recent years. Today, it serves as a major hub for tourism, international shipping, and heavy foreign investment.
Sitting about 230 kilometers southwest of Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville is built on a peninsula lined with popular beaches like Serendipity, Ochheuteal, and Otres, and is surrounded by a handful of beautiful tropical islands. While its economy used to rely mostly on fishing and port activities, it has shifted dramatically toward construction, tourism, and real estate. Through it all, the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port has remained Cambodia’s ultimate maritime gateway, handling the vast majority of the country's sea trade.
Starting in the mid-2010s, Sihanoukville went through a massive, rapid transformation fueled by a wave of Chinese investment in real estate, casinos, and infrastructure. While this boom completely rewrote the city's skyline, it also put a lot of pressure on local infrastructure and fundamentally changed the city's laid-back coastal character. To keep pace, the government rolled out new roads, power plants, and industrial zones as part of a national strategy to cement the city as a major player in regional trade networks.
Once a laid-back backpacker haven, Sihanoukville’s tourism has shifted toward upscale beach resorts and serves as the main jumping-off point for the nearby tropical islands of Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem. Today, the local vibe is a unique blend of Cambodian and Chinese cultural influences, best experienced through its lively seafood markets and diverse food scene.
The rapid boom has brought its fair share of growing pains, including overdevelopment, strained waste management, and environmental concerns. To fix this, Cambodian authorities have launched major urban renewal projects to modernize the city's infrastructure and utilities. The long-term goal is to move past the initial casino rush and reshape Sihanoukville into a sustainable, eco-friendly coastal destination and a thriving, multi-purpose special economic zone.
